One night, Warren, Yunsuk, and I were performing our weekly mental exercises when I had an epiphany. That night, I, ordinary ol' Lisa, figured out what my superpower would be if I were to have one.
To understand the sheer magnitude of this event, I'd like to say that knowing which single superpower you'd have is just as important as actually having a superpower. Having the perfect power means understanding all of the responsibilities of wielding your abilities. The most difficult part about choosing a superpower is making sure that it has no unanticipated consequences.
Here is the image that sparked our interest that night:
The three of us agreed that having an extra life (that we could share with anybody) was definitely the first abilitiy that we'd pick. Being able to save a loved one with no real downside is absolutely amazing.
The second choice caused quite a bit of conflict. At this point, Warren was smart enough to exit the conversation and go to sleep. Yunsuk, on the other hand, chose to have a menu for life. While having a menu sounded like a good idea, there was one other ability that has far more versatility: the power to jump 30 feet into the air and land safely.
I won't go on about the merits of being able to jump anywhere in the city. We could talk all day about the maneuvers that you could pull off by jumping around windowsills and across traffic. You could even calculate how much money you'd save on public transportation every day if you were able to jump 30 feet into the air. Mario-esque powers are sweet, and I would undoubtedly pick them as my second video game superpower, but the epiphany in question was still lying dormant.
As I continued listening to Yunsuk present his argument for his life menu, he suddenly changed the topic. To make things more interesting, he proposed that we take away the boundaries set by the image and discuss our one superpower. I sat in silence as he rambled on about the flaws of teleportation and invisibility (clothing sucks) and as soon as he paused for a breath, it hit me.
The best superpower ever is the ability to mute and unmute anybody in the world at any time.
